No Wimpy Swimmers Here…

Posted on August 28, 2009

Why don’t more people swim?  Oh yea, it’s the hardest sport there is…  Period!   I mean, it is severe punishment for hours on end month after month.  No wonder these are the best athletes in the world!

Welcome New Swimmers

The Blue Dolfins in Oviedo, FL picked up some great rookie swimmers this past season.   Those new to swimming don’t always know what they’re getting into. So, some last only 1 day, some 2, and a few might actually last a week until they hang it up.  But not this group. They seem to enjoy the “Joe harassment,” that I so fondly call “discipline” and they all seem to like to work hard.  I am looking forward to seeing how far the Dolfins can take them.

Veterans–Raise the Bar!

Sometimes athletes think their “backlog” of work last season will be enough to take them through this year.  Yes, they may be “in shape” right now, but they need to raise the bar in order to continue to improve. Sometimes, athletes fall into a comfort zone and inadvertently rests on their laurels. This always comes back to bite them, so continue to fish for ways to get better!

Have you ever heard the expression, “We can bring the horses to water, but we can’t make them drink”?  Well, Charlie and I can give you what you need, but you swimmers have to meet us half way!  There is too much comfort going on! I know people have bad days–no problem! But if you relax one or two days, then it becomes three or four, then a week, etc.—you get the picture.

I don’t care if you are an architect, builder, teacher, software developer or swimmer; if you rest and stop looking for the special things that are going to make you better, you will be caught and passed—quickly…ouch!  No one wants that.

I don’t know if I mentioned this before, but speed and success are NOT going to show up on your doorstep if you didn’t tell them where you live…

There is no rest when reaching for greatness!

–Well, maybe on Sundays.
